The Basics About Electric Bikes

The Basics About Electric Bikes

What Is An Ebike?

An e-bike, short for electric bicycle, is a bicycle that integrates traditional bicycles with modern technology and is equipped with an electric motor to assist pedaling. They work like a regular bike, with the rider activating the motor via pedal action, throttle, or a combination of the two, making it easier to cover hills and longer distances.

E-bikes make riding more convenient and less labor-intensive, making them ideal for leisure, commuting, exploring or hauling cargo, providing a green alternative to traditional transportation.

How Do Electric Bikes Work?

Electric Motor
The motor provides additional power to the wheels, making it easier to pedal, especially uphill or over long distances.

Battery
E-bikes are powered by rechargeable batteries. The range of the bike (how far it can go on one charge) depends on the battery capacity, the rider's weight, the terrain, and how much the rider uses the motor.

Pedal Assist
Most e-bikes come with a pedal assist system (PAS). With pedal assist, the rider controls the motor through their pedalling. And the level of assistance can usually be adjusted. Devices called cadence and torque sensors inside the eBike motor measure how fast and how hard the rider is pedalling, thus providing the perfect amount of power to the ride.

Throttle Mechanism
Some e-bikes have a throttle on the handlebars that allows you to engage the motor without pedalling.

The throttle will allow you to propel your eBike forward with the twist of your wrist. By twisting the throttle, the eBike's motor engages with a specified amount of power, depending upon how much torque is applied by the rider, and propels your wheels forward.

Throttle-powered eBikes are great for folks who like to be able to take off on a whim or enjoy the feeling of riding a moped.
